Since 1996, Allomet has developed proprietary, patented, and proven technologies related to the design, development, manufacture, and processing of specialty composite metal powders.

Savings Through Improvements
In Productivity And Tool Life

Allomet EternAloy® grade offers a variety of core particles and design features that can be tailored for the application to provide the highest level of performance in terms of productivity and greatly extended tool life. Some examples of the core particles that can be consolidated into EternAloy® grade powder are Titanium CarboNitride, Aluminum Oxide, polycrystalline Diamond, cubic Boron Nitride, Titanium Nitride and Silicon Carbide.

Presently Available Compositions:

Al2O3 Core Particle with WC-Co Matrix
Ti(C,N) Core Particle with WC-Co Matrix

Allomet’s EternAloy® grade materials can be utilized in cutting applications essentially with the same alternatives as Tungsten Carbide inserts.

  • Uncoated: Cutting applications for which it is currently necessary to cut without coatings, EternAloy® grade will show tremendous improvements in tool life compared to uncoated Tungsten Carbide.
  • Coated: EternAloy® grade can be coated with the same processes and materials as Tungsten Carbide. Coated EternAloy® grade has shown that it will at least double the tool life of Tungsten Carbide inserts with the identical coating.
  • Tipped Inserts: EternAloy® grade can be brazed onto steel or carbide tool holders in the same process as is used for Diamond or cubic Boron Nitride tips. Allomet can furnish sintered disks that can be cut with an EDM into the sizes and shapes required. The tips can also be pressed and sintered to near net shape requiring only minimal grinding after brazing. In addition, chip breakers and chip control features can be pressed in further improving performance.

In addition to the variety of core particles that can be consolidated, other design parameters that can be modified to tailor EternAloy® grade to provide specific performance enhancements are: Increasing or decreasing core particle size, increasing or decreasing the thickness of the WC coating, increasing or decreasing core volume percentage, powders of different thickness, diameter and core material particle parameters, and transitioning from zones or layers of one powder to another or others with different wear characteristics.

Allomet EternAloy® grade powders can be pressed exactly like Tungsten Carbide Alloys utilizing the same tooling. Pressed powders can then be sinter HIP to finished parts utilizing parameters available from Allomet.

The ability of TCHP grades to maintain high hardness at elevated temperatures is a key benefit that is unmatched by WC-CO tools. This is especially critical for high speed machining using sinter TCHP cutting tools for achieving productivity gains through higher metal removal rates under challenging machining conditions. Thus, Cutting Tool inserts pressed from Allomet's EternAloy® grade powders have broad application in Metal Cutting.
